Χείρα Βοηθείας at the Winter Fayre
We had been assigned an enviable pitch [thanks, Neisha!]. Building on our experience over the last 18 months the Χείρα Βοηθείας’ publicity machine was in top gear. A magnificent banner announced our presence and our purpose. A beautifully crafted display board [thanks, Kirsten and Jørgen!] caught the attention of those passing.
The Steering Group had recognised the need to improve the publicity about our work, the finances, the Sponsor a Food Bag Programme. So we had leaflets explaining who we are and describing the contents of the typical food bag. We had posters displaying our financial accounts – we even had receipts from our shopping expeditions! A fine assortment of photographs recorded the highlights of the last 18 months. Many people could be seen reading the Frequently Asked Questions [with answers!] presentation.
On hand were members of the Steering Group and the growing number of supporters, giving out leaflets (400 were distributed), answering questions, receiving donations and, crucially, securing more sponsorship pledges to fund the food bags.
One idea you might like to consider – we were given a donation by someone who had decided to give Χείρα Βοηθείας the money they would have spent on Christmas Cards!
After an exhausting day, the outcomes were 11 new sponsors – adding 215€ to the six-weekly income; we received 247.40€ in donations [not including all the pennies people gave us! – we will count them and let you know the result when we get a minute!]; the banner, posters, leaflets, the whole thing brought Χείρα Βοηθείας to the attention of a huge new group of people.
Pete Sheppard, member of the Steering Group, commented “Such success is the result of hard work by all our supporters. If we can continue to build a flexible organisation, open to new ideas, willing to try new things we can make a real difference to the families in need in Apokoronas. Finding 101 ways to involve people in our work – that is the way forward!”
Yannis Kouros
- in Vryses on his way from Imbros to Chania
Apokoronas welcomes Yannis Kouros
Vice-Mayor Manolis Nikoloudis spoke briefly about the Municipality’s keenness to promote a culture of sport and healthy activity not just for the body but also for the mind.
Yannis Kouros himself, evidently conscious of the very large number of school students and young people in his audience, gave a brief insight into his motivation for his marathon running, the need to keep on keeping on even when its hurts in order to achieve our goals not just for ourselves but for the future of Greece.
After a session of questions and answers with Mr. Kouros, the Mayor reminded us all of the event planned for tomorrow, Sunday. Yannis Kouros will run from the village of Imbros to the National Stadium in Chania. His route takes him through Vryses, to Agioi Pantes, Neo Chorio, Armenoi, Kalyves, Kalami, Souda and on to Chania – that’s about 90 kms! It is in aid of the Syllogos Συνάνθρωπος – the Orphanage in Chania. He encouraged everyone who can to turn out to line the streets. Many are planning to join Yannis running a short part of the way with him.
It is estimated that Yannis will arrive in Vryses between 10 am and 11.am (depending on the precise start time). Certainly many intended to turn out to wave and applaud a fantastic athlete. Maybe we will see you for coffee en route!

English Style Fish and Chip Suppers
Would you like to eat freshly cooked fish and chips in the comfort of someone’s home and help to raise money for Χείρα Βοηθείας and animal charities?
Once again Heather and David Welham are inviting us into their home for a three course meal including freshly cooked fish and chips (vegetarian alternative available!). All the money raised goes to charity. Over the last two years they have raised 1,800 euros for charities in Crete and this year the target is 1,000 euros to be divided equally between Χείρα Βοηθείας and animal charities.
David’s family ran a well-known fish and chip shop in Lowestoft and David is carrying on that tradition. We have been several times and always received a very warm welcome and an extremely tasty meal. Please support this enterprising couple!
As you will see from the information below you must book your place and if there is bad weather or a strike the fish supplies may not arrive! But believe me it will be worth waiting for!!!

- all packed and ready to go!
Volunteers (see bottom left!) had collected the food from Lidl the day before so we would be ready. Just a quick glance at the photos of the Food Bank before we packed shows the huge quantities they had shifted.
It had been a bit of a rush as we wanted to complete November’s distribution and still leave time for us to order, buy, fetch and pack the food and other essential items in time for Christmas. It never stops!
As a just reward for our efforts we recuperated over coffee (something stronger for some!) in the local kafeneion. It was the perfect combination of a social event with a serious purpose.
School's Out!
This is not Inland Tourism
- it is Environmental Vandalism!
Stones removed, retaining walls dislodged, and soil exposed to rain erosion. This wanton vandalism in a beautiful forest is plain to see. We take no pleasure in publishing the photographs for the record.
How could this happen? Everyone – residents and visitors – knows that the beautiful environment of Crete is the reason for much of the tourist industry. Its thoughtless destructionon is an attack on both the history and the future prosperity of the island.
All this is thanks to the Sfakia Extreme Trails Festival which took place on 4, 5 and 6 October 2013. The race was down the kalderimi, stones were cleared from the path, and piled up at the sides or in one case to actually obstruct the kaldermini. Bridges and ‘jumps’ were constructed. The plastic fencing they used lies abandoned as rubbish. Where the kalderimi makes sharp ‘zig-zags’, the bikers’ route left the kalderimi, and carved out steep dirt paths to cut the corners off. On these paths, the soil is no longer retained by plants and will soon become eroded because the flow of rain water will be faster over the exposed soil. Where the stone side-walls have been taken down, the kalderimi will be much more vulnerable to erosion from the rain over the winters.
All this has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of – wait for it – the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) and SylvaMED, an environmental EU agency whose job is to “promote the social uses of forests”!
The Municipality of Sfakia gives its blessing – presumably setting aside its pride and respect for the traditions and legacy of generations past and the working environment of generations to come. Then there is ANEK contributing a whacking 50% discount on ferry fares to encourage people to come and have fun destroying our place. Bravo, one and all!
As the beaches empty, the mountain trails remain popular. Green “inland” tourism has a vital part to play in the future prosperity of Crete. No-one has the right to risk that for a few quick euros.
The Organisers told us they hope the race will become a regular event. They hope for more and more competitors. We saw the damage they did this year…
We will be sending this Report and the photographs to the Sponsors of this environmental damage. We shall insist that they sponsor the re-instatement of the damaged sections and walls. We further require that they use their “influence” to assist the organizers of this event to find a more suitable venue.
If you feel strongly about this, please express your views to the following Agencies (and send us a copy for the website) using their email addresses.

More Support for
Χείρα Βοηθείας takes stock
It was agreed that we need to widen the involvement of supporters in our activities. Every opportunity must be taken to enable people to participate and to get first hand experience of what Χείρα Βοηθείας is trying to achieve. We must take more steps to avoid “doing everything ourselves”, because this will narrow our circle of supporters and leave us open to misunderstandings and misinformation.
The formal organisation of the Somateio will be investigated further before we commit the organisation to that direction, particularly in light of recent events. John will arrange a meeting with a lawyer who is prepared to act for Χείρα Βοηθείας without payment. She will advise us on the legal pros and cons of the somateio approach. Already Georgos Atsalakis has agreed to be our accountant on a pro bono basis.
Exploratory talks are taking place to bring the Steering Group back to full strength.
Some time was spent on reviewing our fund-raising efforts in 2013. The Group discussed what had gone well and what needed improvement. A thread running throughout was the recognition of the need to put much more effort into promoting Χείρα Βοηθείας, so that everyone appreciates the importance of the work and can see the results of all the effort.
One area of concern, which we had discussed before, was the need to take care that we do not try to “hoover up” as much money as possible. There has to be a limit. The people of Apokoronas are fantastically generous but there are many demands being made on their money! We have on several occasions discussed the possibility of co-ordinating with the charities operating in Apokoronas, to find a consensus about the intensity of fund-raising, so that needs can be met without (literally in our case!) beggaring our neighbours. By showing some constraint, Χείρα Βοηθείας can set an example and encourage such a dialogue.
We have set the timetable for the next distribution of food and essential items to the 241 families on the “list”:
Jo and John will put our order in on 2nd November. John will organise the fetching of the things to Nippos on November 12th.
We will pack the food bags at the Nippos Food Bank on Wednesday 13th November for distribution on the 14th and 15th.
Last time we were joined by some “new” packers who had not really been aware of the scale of the operation! It is an opportunity to for you to get involved. If you would like to join us, please ring Pete on 6943683064. Spaces are a bit limited – so let us know. If not this time, maybe next? The Packing will take place at 10.30 am to make it possible for those with other commitments early in the morning to participate. It takes about an hour or perhaps an hour and a half. This means we can have a coffee together afterwards in the kafeneion opposite!
If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or suggestions, please get in touch on [email protected]

Serenata Kriti
presents 500 euros to
The Blythe String Quartet had played three concerts - in Chania, Rethymnon and the Loutro Taverna here in Apokoronas - as part of Serenata Kriti’s Festival of Chamber Music Concerts in Crete. Everyone who had the privilege to attend these events was unanimous in their praise of the Quartet, featuring Lucy Curnow on violin, Peter Graham on violin, Dominic Moore on viola and Anita Melita Beryl on cello.
Moira, Serenata Kriti’s Concert Manager, has already begun negotiations to bring two tours to Crete in 2014. She told us that the project had caught the imagination of top musicians in London, all eager and willing to come and provide us with such memorable experiences.
So watch this space!
The Founding of the Albanian Syllogos
of Apokoronas
There had been a lot of preparatory work behind the scenes by Miltos Tsekouras (former Adviser to the Migrant Inclusion Council of Apokoronas) and Nikos Georgakis. The official paperwork had been gathered. Information had been given about exactly what a Syllogos is and how it could support the Albanian people living in Apokoronas and safeguard their interests.
As a legal entity, the Albanian Syllogos has the legal entitlement to have its problems and concerns brought officially to the attention of the Municipal Council to be resolved.
The first step was to seek candidates for the Council of the Syllogos. Nine people volunteered. They were elected unanimously. They then withdrew to elect the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary, the Treasurer and the Press Officer. Once these positions had been decided and the results announced, the hall was filled with great applause.
From the enthusiasm and from the expression on people’s faces, you got the distinct impression that those present were aware they had just done something of great significance. Indeed they had – they had set in motion the process of establishing the FIRST Albanian Syllogos in the whole of Greece!
Leonidas Limantzakis, the former Mayor of Vamos, welcomed the new Albanian Syllogos. He went on to say that, in the event of a victory for Mr. Koukianakis in the Municipal Elections in May 2014, the new Administration would give every support and encouragement to the Albanian Community and its new Syllogos, promising Municipal Council support to help solve their problems.
Pete Sheppard, the EU Representative on the Apokoronas Migrant Inclusion Council, congratulated the Albanian Community on their new Syllogos. He emphasized the need for all foreigners to share ideas and work together. Of immediate practical help to the Syllogos, he said, was Χείρα Βοηθείας – the Municipally-supported work to raise money to buy food and other essential items to support all those in need in Apokoronas. The new Albanian Syllogos could make sure that members of the Albanian Community in need could get support.
With his other hat, as Editor of GefyraTheBridge, he offered assistance in publicizing the new Syllogos and its work by providing it with its own webpage within the Gefyra website. He would work with Ardjan, the Syllogos’ Press Officer, to start a bi-lingual Albanian-Greek (English translations to follow!) page as soon as possible.
The Council Members of the Albanian Syllogos of Apokoronas are :
President: TZIMIS REMZI MEMISHAHAJ
Vice-President : NIKO JORGAQI
Secretary : ALEKOS HANI
Treasurer : ILIR GJINI
Press Officer : ARDJAN LUSHAJ

Χείρα Βοηθείας : Distribution of Food & Other Essentials
Aggeliki has sent us this photo record. It is an important reminder of what your generosity and hard work are for!
We received this message from Janelle
Serenata Kriti was a great success with 400 people attending the three concerts. We raised €4000. After expenses we have €1000 to give to charities, €500 to Red Cross and €500 to Helping Hands.
We are currently discussing arrangements with a quartet that is scheduled to come to Crete next May. We will be running with two festivals next year, in May and September. We would appreciate it if you could tell your members how thrilled we were that so many people attended the first Serenata Kriti and that we raised €1000 for charity.
Many thanks for your support,
Janelle
It is back to business –
Χείρα Βοηθείας prepares the next distribution of food!
The Georgioupolis Square Concert, the Stylos Fun Run, the Car Boot Sale, the Loutro Evening of Classical Music, the Embrosneros event ( a magnificent €1,250), the Sponsor A Bag Project (now standing at €475 every 6 weeks!) as well as some wonderful donations from the Toneel Drama Group (a whopping €1,000!), Cretan Island Estates and individual supporters – all this effort had been turned into food and essential items to be packed into 241 Food Bags for families in need in Apokoronas.
As usual the packing was a good-humoured affair, the inevitable glitches being met with swiftly improvised solutions!
You can see the result below.
The Blythe String Quartet plays Loutro
A Memorable Experience ...
Our Programme comprised the Haydn Quartet Opus 64 No.5, popularly known as “The Lark”, the Quatettsatz by Schubert and the Ravel Quartet.
There must have been 300 people who came to the Loutro Taverna in Agioi Pantes to enjoy this moment of high culture here in Apokoronas. The setting of the Loutro was perfect – the late afternoon sun dappling the still green-leaved trees- the quietude - apart from the occasional bird singing in participation with the music.
It is not often that we get the chance just to sit, to listen and allow the music to evoke feelings and thoughts – the decision to play without amplification was thoroughly justified by the intensity of the atmosphere which resulted.
A special thanks goes to all those involved in the planning and realisation of the Tour and, of course, to the players themselves for a most memorable experience!
The profits from the three concerts will be shared between the Chania Red Cross and Χείρα Βοηθείας.
If you were fortunate enough to attend and would like to send your comments about the concert, please do so to [email protected] If you have photographs of the event to share, please let us have them!
There is more information about Serenata Kriti here www.serenatakriti.wordpress.com . You can also follow them on Facebook by entering “Serenata Kriti”.

“What a treat to be presented with such accomplished musicians playing to such an appreciative audience! The programme was chosen well to appeal to all tastes. The setting was beautiful - outdoors under huge trees, but therein lay the problem. Sitting near the back I could hear little of the introductions and completely lost many nuances in the quieter passages. Although delightful, a better venue needs to be sought for next year - and there must be one with better acoustics (the theatre at Embrosneros, perhaps?) or is amplification a possibility? The final encore was accompanied by two owls, a cat and a dog - which must make a change from their usual concerts!
An enthusiastic “Thank you” to the musicians, Moira and the other organisers for a superb evening. They MUST return!”
Sue comments
“We were at Loutro last night to hear this wonderful string quartet. But, sadly we could barely hear them, and could not hear the speakers at all, it was very frustrating. However it was really good to have such apparently high quality classical musicians here in Apokoronas, so hopefully this will be the first of many such events, plus better acoustics or some form of amplification. The setting was good and a lovely atmosphere, so in spite of difficulties, we had a pretty good evening.
Thanks to the musicians and organisers.
All good wishes”

Annual Car Boot Sale - another great success!
Χείρα Βοηθείας held its Annual Car Boot Sale on Sunday
Issie, with her usual determination, had assembled willing supporters to staff the stalls, organise the parking and generally get ready for the onslaught.
We were lucky with the weather - it was scorching hot in deep contrast with the storms of the day before! We even had a slight breeze off the sea to help us through. Next year we might try selling cold drinks!!
The traditional Raffle, the Pasta Game and the Bric-a-brac stalls along with the fees from the pitches brought in the magnificent sum of 980.15 euros.
Thanks to all who helped, to the Municipality for its support and, of course, to everyone who came and spent their money!

Community Council of Stylos defends the Koiliaris River
A RUN FOR HEALTH
"KOILIARIS 2013"
The races were in two categories, 6km and 10 km. Both routes started with great razzamataz and efficient organisation in Nio Chorio and ended to applause and great celebration in the village of Stylos.
168 people of all ages, shapes and sizes signed up for the 6km race. The pace was hot – and so was the weather. It wasn’t long before things settled down – in many cases to a brisk (or in some cases not so brisk) walk as the demands of the body caught up with the extravagant imaginings of the mind. And my feet hurt! We didn’t meet up with the 100 participants in the 10km race until they sped past us in the closing straight!!
Arrival in Stylos was heralded by the Master of Ceremonies who had sent us on our way in Nio Horio. Having moved the entire admin operation to the Finish Line, the organizers were able to welcome each competitor by name and in our cases by mention of Χείρα Βοηθείας. We were given our places and times (107th - not bad, 57 minutes and 56 seconds - could do better! Will train for next year – that’s what I said to myself last year!
We had been looked after all the way by Red Cross Volunteers, by volunteers showing us the route and by strategically placed water stations. More water – Samaria, of course! – greeted us at the Finish. Then fully (?) revived, we proceeded to the Kerasma (Treats) provided by the Community Council and Syllogos of Stylos, picking up our Diplomas on the way.
After a suitable period of “refreshment” – lemonade for some, though I did see cold beers being greedily consumed, we moved onto to the Presentation of Cups and Winners’ T-Shirts. Local Dignatories, including Mayor Grigoris Markakis, Vice-Mayors Manolis Haritakis and Petros Vagionakis, made the presentations and the representative of the Chania Orphanage and myself on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας (the two organisations to benefit from the money raised) were given the honour of being part of the Presentation Group.
The party was getting under way as we left for a hot foot bath, to dream of what might have been! Maybe next year …
The Fun Runs brought our week-end of Fund-Raising to a close with a sum of €580 to add to the Georgioupolis money to make a grand total of everyone’s efforts a magnificent €2,900.52!
Well Done, everyone!
Χείρα Βοηθείας’ Record-Breaking Fund-Raiser in words and pictures!

Teams had been hard at work distributing posters and leaflets in English, Greek, Russian and German making sure visitors to Apokoronas as well as local residents knew about the event.
As always the practical support and assistance of the Municipality in the form of Vice-Mayors Manolis Nikoloudis and Petros Vagionakis, Councillors Sifis Stavroulakis, Nikos Kokolakis and Pantelis Kaparoudakis ensured our efforts were a success.
The evening’s entertainment began with traditional Cretan music, dancing and singing – Γιώργος Ρεθεμιώτακης (λύρα / lyre), Μανώλης Μπαλωμενάκης (λαούτο / lute) and Μανώλης Περκολαράκης (λαούτο / lute) set the tone with some wonderful playing. Soon there followed traditional dancing beautifully presented by what must the junior section of the Akrites dance troupe. This section culminated in dances performed by their older colleagues.
This celebration of the traditional Cretan art forms was crowned by a moving song from Pantelis Kaparoudakis relating an old story (if not the old story!) about a beautiful young women dressed all in gold on a white horse.
The finale was an invitation by Γιώργος for the audience to show off their Greek dancing skills. (This needs more work on our part!!).
The logistics worked smoothly and soon Dog Pound Blues had taken to the stage and Chrissie and the band were belting out their distinctive brand of rock and roll. They had a large part of the audience on their feet. A special surprise was the guest appearance of Carl Axon to put the finishing touch to a rousing session.
Throughout the evening, Χείρα Βοηθείας volunteers moved through the crowd shaking their tins. It might have seemed a bit slow at the time but when the tins were opened and the takings added up, the real level of people’s generosity in support of all those in need in Apokoronas, because of the economic crisis, was clear – Maria, Sue, Ann, Kirsten, Jo, Bob, Keir, Jill, Trish, Chris, Ann, Ian and Tony – together had collected a magnificent €2,320.52 !
Jørgan recorded the event and we have posted his pictures below.
A Big Thankyou to everyone who helped – there were so many who did their bit! Often a word of encouragement is enough to keep us hard at work.
And now we are off to the Races…
Xirosterni celebrates a famous son
People gathered first in the small square beside the old wells of Xirosterni for the unveiling of a magnificent ‘bas relief’ in bronze showing the seated musician playing his lyre (worth a visit!). The unveiling was preceded by speeches, and accompanied by a musical ensemble – a brief taster of what was to come! It was accompanied by a burst of enthusiastic applause by the crowd. Members of Harilaos’s family, including from the U.S.A., paid warm personal tributes to him and were presented with beautiful glass plaques commemorating the event.
The crowd then moved en masse a hundred yards along the road to the venue for the feast and concert. Every seat was soon taken at the numerous long tables and people spilled on to the surrounding walls and paved areas setting up their own impromptu ‘tables’. These did not go overlooked when it came to distributing the, by this time very welcome, bottles of water, raki and wine!
The evening was just beginning and we were treated to an amazing series of ‘acts’ on the stage: musical ensembles, including many lyre players, an interlude of ‘mantinades’ sung in traditional attire - powerful unaccompanied voices filling the air, and phenomenal displays of traditional Cretan dancing by troupes from Australia and Crete. It was not long before members of the audience were joining in!
The atmosphere was electric with the intense rhythms of the music and dancing and the buzz of the crowd enjoying a delicious feast of salads, lamb and pilaffi, rounded off with delicious honey-coated balls. It was well past eleven when we took our leave of the Xirosterni family with whom we’d shared the evening, but things looked nowhere near drawing to a close! Well done Xirosterni, thank you for a memorable evening!
Greater Protection from fire - gets nearer!
The gathering was introduced by several short speeches welcoming us. The consistent theme was the need for the community of Apokoronas to pull together to find our own solutions to our problems. There seemed a well-founded scepticism about the ability and/or willingness of the central Greek Government in Athens to help us.
The Apokoronas Group of Emergency Volunteers with the help of the Municipality and the Cultural Associations of Apokoronas had organised a very smooth operation.
We were entertained throughout the evening by a brilliant array of musicians from the Traditional Association of Apokoronas Musicians «ΧΑΡΙΛΑΟΣ» who took it in turns to show off their skills. A troupe of very young dancers set the highest standard of dancing for the evening.
The Entrance Fee came with the promise of a “Full Menu”. By midnight we were the ones who were full – starting slowly with tzatziki, cheese, salad, lamb then some more lamb, then a bit more lamb, we were finished off by bowls of steaming hot pilafi. Wine and beer flowed seemingly without end.
The Maitre’d (whose name I didn’t get – apologies!) did a fantastic job and marshaled his waiters with great skill. No-one went without for very long!
The impressive turn-out included quite a number of residents from other countries (Nippos was particularly well represented in this regard!) – illustrating the theme of the event that “Together, we can!”
Every picture is worth a lot of words. Thanks to Jørgan we have a slide show which tells the story of the evening more eloquently than I can!

The Contribution is dramatic as well!
Yesterday (Friday) Χείρα Βοηθείας received this message from Peter
“I am delighted to write to you in my capacity of the current chairperson of the Toneel Drama Group to tell you that our members today voted that we should contribute a further sum of €800 to your cause.
We have had a really successful production and are really pleased that we can put that success to such good use. Hopefully this contribution will go a little way to meeting the funds required to for you to continue your excellent work in supporting the less fortunate members of the community in which we all live.”
Pete Sheppard, speaking on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας, added:
“This is fantastic! After we had to cancel this month’s concert we faced a financial problem. This contribution comes at exactly the right moment. Our Procurement Team are already gearing up for the distribution in August around the major Greek Orthodox festival of the Assumption of Mary and her reunion with her son, Jesus Christ on the 15th.
We were further heartened in our difficulties by an anonymous donation of €500 and another one of €40. Our community continues to pull together and will become stronger in the process to face the many challenges ahead”

Greek Language Students Gather...
More than 100 people completed application forms. Almost 90 have been placed in the appropriate Class. Others have chosen to wait for classes in September.
There will be 6 classes each of 3 hours duration and they will run twice a week.
The Administrator, Mr Manolis Vestakis and his team of teachers have worked hard over the last 10 days to get the classes organised. The classes have proved to be so popular that Vice-Mayor Michelakis approached the Headteacher of the High School on Vamos to support the programme with accommodation. This has been readily agreed.
No sooner have we started these courses than there is talk of extending the Municipality’s plan for a Lifelong Learning Programme ! This we hope will include a course in Greek Cookery. Watch this space!
Erotocritos in Embrosneros
The musicians also sang many of the verses of the poem.
Mayor Grigoris Markakis welcomed us. Organisers thanked the Mayor, Mr. Manolis Nikoloudis,Vice-Mayor responsible for Cultural Affairs and the Municipal Council for their support, including for the technical help they had provided.
In front of an audience of several hundred spectators, the cast brought the story of Erotocritos and Aretousa to life. The setting, in the amphitheatre of Kremastos at Embrosneros, the sky aglow with the setting sun in the cool of the evening, added to the performance.
Congratulations were showered on all those who had worked so hard to entertain us.
We are pleased to present this short slide show of the performance. Thanks go to Babis Koutsoupakis for the photographs.
More determined than ever!
Altogether 227 families will receive support. This includes more than 300 children. The Procurement Team, responsible for making sure that the supplies collected using the Red Boxes are augmented by buying food, had spent almost €3,000 this time. This has severely depleted the reserves!
The forced cancellation of the Carl Axon Concert at the end of June has made the task even harder. Nevertheless, the active supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας are determined to re-double their efforts to ensure that the Musical Evening in Georgioupolis Square on Saturday August 3rd is a huge success. Already Dog Pound Blues have agreed to play.
Another fantastic reaction to the financial challenge! The Χείρα Βοηθείας team have been contacted by supporters including some currently in England asking for details of the charity’s Bank Account so they can make financial donations direct into our coffers!
At present, we can donate money by internet transfer to this account or we can take our donations in cash directly to the National Bank in Vrysses or anywhere!
This is the information you will need: –
Bank Name: The National Bank of Greece
Bank Address: Vrysses
Bank Post Code: 73007
Account Name : SHEPPARD PETER RAYMOND RAYMOND LANE ANTHONY RICHARD RICHARD Account No. 821/594335/39
IBAN: GR7501108210000082159433539
SWIFT-BIC: ETHNGRAA
Please email us on [email protected] to make sure we can track your donation. And Thank you!
After a pretty difficult week, the sight of the packed food parcels and the emails pledging support in the face of our difficulties is an inspiration to all involved!
Carl Axon Concert Cancelled
“It is with regret that I have to inform you that we have decided to cancel the Carl Axon Concert on the 29th June.
This is for reasons beyond our control. Tickets are being withdrawn and money returned.
I want to thank all those for the work they have put into this event
The loss of urgently needed funds to buy food and other essential items for all those in need in Apokoronas (including more than 300 children) is a terrible shame.
Nevertheless I want to reassure the community of Apokoronas that the active members of the Steering Group will redouble our efforts to make our Summer Fund-raising events even more successful. That will be our response to the situation we find ourselves in.
The next distribution scheduled for Tuesday 18th June is being prepared. We have had to spend over €2,900 this time as the list of families in need in Apokoronas continues to grow. This makes the above cancellation even more of a blow. We really must find ways of avoiding such problems in the future. This will be discussed at the next meeting of the Steering Group. One important step may be to consider the composition of the Steering Group to make sure we are harnessing all the positive energy that we have among our number.
We must gear up to make the Georgioupolis Square event on Saturday August 3rd and the Apokoronas Fun Run on August 4th tremendously successful to ensure we can fund the distribution for the August Festival on the 15th.
Onwards and upwards!”
A Theatrical Performance by the High School of Vrysses “Erotocritos”
A few words about the play ...
The "Erotokritos" the many lined narrative poem written by the poet Vitsentzos Kornaros around 1500-1600 and set in Ancient Athens, is the foremost achievement of our Modern Greek Literature.
This play addresses the pure amatory feeling of two young people, Erotokritos and Aretousa, a feeling above all that is "not appropriate”, since the social conditions of the time did not allow Erotokritos, the son of the Adviser to the King, to fall in love with and marry the princess.
So the two young people pass through many trials, such as conflicts with their loved ones, exile, imprisonment and even epic battles ˙ but friendship, a father’s love and innocent youthful love emerge unscathed from each battle.
Really what has greater power than love?
The rest you will see on the stage…
The music group of EPAL of Vrysses will participate. After the show, without payment, George Chairetis and Constantinos Skouloudis with their band will entertain us.

Αλήθεια τι έχει μεγαλύτερη δύναμη από την αγάπη;

Pete Sheppard, the EU Residents’ representative on the Migrant Inclusion Council of Apokoronas and Miltos Tsekouras, Adviser to the Council welcomed the would-be students. They introduced Manolis Vestakis who is the course provider.
Mr Vestakis outlined the programmes available. The Beginners’ Class (A1) and the Intermediate Class (A2) are both ready to start immediately. The Ministry has already defined the syllabus and provided the books and course materials.
These Courses are part of the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme and so are to some extent flexible to meet the needs of “more mature students”. Those present clearly understood the importance of the intensity of the lessons. They will be 3 hour sessions twice a week.
The exact timing and days of the week for both A1 and A2 will be agreed by teachers and students at the next meeting on THURSDAY 13th JUNE at 10 am at the former Town Hall in Vamos. Also at that meeting, students will complete a short painless Placement Test to make sure they go into the right class.
The Advanced Courses are still being prepared but you can get your name on the list now.
Already 58 Application Forms have been received! If you have missed out there is still time to apply for any of the courses. Despite their best efforts, the organisers admitted that the circulation list of the Anglican Church of St. Thomas, Avrio, Apokoronasourhome, the Cretan International Community and Gefyrathebridge, needs to be extended. Steps will be taken this week.
If you would like more information, email [email protected] or phone Pete Sheppard on 6943683064.
Χείρα Βοηθείας΄ Supporters Meet
The main item of discussion was to make the final preparations for the Musical Extravaganza Evening. That will take place on Saturday June 29th at 7.30 pm. at the Vamos High School featuring Carl Axon and the Rockin Rebels plus David Hartley.
Numbered tickets (€10 each) and posters were distributed. Volunteers agreed to ask shops and tavernas across Apokoronas to display the posters and sell the tickets.
Closer to the date, another team will put up posters in the areas of Vamos, Almyrida, Kalyves, Plaka, Gavalohori etc.
Vice-Mayor, Manolis Nikoloudis, reported that he had made arrangements for the necessary permits, the stage, the chairs and tables and of course the electrical supply!
The food – BBQ meats, a Chinese curry as well as vegetarian pitas – are all in hand. There will be a bar fully stocked with wine, beer and soft drinks.
Next item – and one that becomes more and more important – the MONEY. Around 40% of the food we need comes to us from the Red Boxes in the local shops. The rest we must buy. Currently we need to spend around €2,500 for each distribution (every 6 weeks). Our current reserves stand at just €5,700. The need to make the Carl Axon Concert a huge success was clear to all those present at the meeting!
The date for the next distribution is under discussion.
Lastly there was a brief conversation about the food items we distribute to all those in need in Apokoronas. There was agreement that we must review the list of things we put in each bag to maximise value for money and ensure the best possible nutritional benefits.
Again through the work of Vice-Mayor, Manolis Nikoloudis, it has been agreed that the events organised by or for the benefit of Χείρα Βοηθείας during the Summer will be included in the Municipality’s Summer Programme advertising campaign. This is vitally important as a further step to bringing Χείρα Βοηθείας and its work to the attention of the whole community of Apokoronas.

Apokoronas Farmers’ Market Stronger than ever!
The decision of the Municipality to hold the Farmers’ Market on Big Friday at the beginning of the Easter Holiday weekend was obviously a good one. There were crowds, traffic struggled to get through the village of Vrysses as people on foot, on motorbikes, in pick-ups and in cars made their way, full of anticipation, to the market and then fully laden with their purchases struggled back to the reviving “lemonade” at one of the village’s many kafeneions. The tables on the pavements were abuzz as friends met up with friends.
By announcing the date for the market much earlier, clashes with other events were avoided and the people came.
For the producers of locally grown salad, vegetables and fruit as well as the small businesses of Vrysses, the Municipality’s initiative is providing much needed support and encouragement to our local economy.
Easter Greeting from Grigoris Markakis,
Mayor of Apokoronas
gives us all optimism, love and hope.
Let us respond to the needs of the time for solidarity and cohesion
so that we preserve our society”
Solidarity is extended to the residents of Apokoronas
“We are doing what we can to support the vulnerable families in our Municipality. At this moment more than 200 families in Apokoronas are being supplied with all sorts of basic necessities which are collected thanks to people’s support”, say the members of Χείρα Βοηθείας, the voluntary organisation which has been formed in Apokoronas to face the crisis.
Yesterday in the Apokoronas Town Hall in Vrysses, there took place a lottery for a Television and the money collected has been given to meet the needs of Χείρα Βοηθείας.
As Pete Sheppard, a founder member of Χείρα Βοηθείας, stressed “At the moment more than 200 families are being helped by the aid we manage to collect. About 20% comes from the Red Boxes which we have placed in the mini-markets and supermarkets throughout Apokoronas where people can put pasta, rice, tinned goods – whatever long-life products they can. The rest is purchased with money from lotteries, donations and with the generosity of the people of Apokoronos. We are working hard and day by day we try to improve the situation in our Municipality.”
With the start of the tourist season, Χείρα Βοηθείας will start an initiative to approach the visitors to the Apokoronas area, to ask them to make a contribution. “We will prepare leaflets to put in the hotels in Almyrida, in Georgioupolis and in Kalyves to inform the visitors about how they can help. Also we will put on a public entertainment in the square of Georgioupolis, with traditional Cretan Music and an English Musical Band [Dog Pound Blues – Editor’s note], in an effort to strengthen our effort even further. In everything we do, the Municipality is an invaluable partner,” stressed Mr Sheppard.
The Municipality
“The initiative belonged to Χείρα Βοηθείας so they can collect money to buy the food we need. It went very well. The TV was a gift from Municipal Councillor Mr Sifis Stavroulakis,” mentioned Vice-Mayor Mr Petros Vagionakis.
As regards actions of solidarity in the Apokoronas area, Mr Vagionakis reported that “despite the difficulties we are facing, we continue to do what we can. Unfortunately we are in a bad situation where the needs, because of the economic crisis, continuously increase. However, we are a strong group, the people from other countries who live in Apokoronas, the Municipality, Voithia Sto Spiti and the Social Services, the Agia Sofia Foundation, the Parishes of Apokoronas and the shops that are willing to accept the Red Boxes in which the food from our fellow residents is collected.”
The winner of the lottery was Mrs. Eleni Frantzeskaki with ticket number 1093.
Migrant Inclusion Council Election Report
In the event, three candidates had put in their nominations. Chairing the meeting, Vice-Mayor Miichelakis welcomed us and invited the three candidates to make brief statements as to why they wished those present to vote for them. After thankfully brief speeches, the secret ballot was conducted. The successful candidate was Pete Sheppard.
Pete Sheppard, after his successful election, commented: “I want to thank those who encouraged me to be a candidate and those who came to vote. Also I want to thank those who sent in messages of support but couldn’t make it tonight. As I said to all those present, this is just the start. There will be plenty of work for all of us. Sitting on the Migrant Inclusion Council is just one way of helping to enhance the social cohesion of our Municipality. When the work begins in earnest I am sure we can rely on the unsuccessful candidates and their supporters to work alongside us.”

Χείρα Βοηθείας Easter Distribution completed!
The sheer volume of food bears great testimony to the generosity of the people of Apokoronas. Many buy an extra item when they are shopping and put it in the Red Box in the shop. Many have supported our wonderfully successful fund-raising events. The result: you can see in our small slide show here.

Χείρα Βοηθείας Getting Ready for Easter
Tony Lane, a member, emphasised “This distribution cost more than €3,000. About 20% of the food was donated by the residents of Apokoronas using the Red Boxes we have placed in the shops all over the Municipality. The rest of the food we have to buy. Our fellow residents continue to be wonderfully generous.”
Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis, on behalf the Municipal Council, has pledged a loaf of Easter Bread for each family as one example of the support the Council is giving to Χείρα Βοηθείας.
Pete Sheppard, another member, said: “It is thanks to the generosity of our fellow residents and the hard work of our volunteers that this is possible. It is particularly important at this time of year that we should spare a thought for others less fortunate than ourselves. Look out for our fund-raising events and come along. They are always enjoyable and you will be supporting a good cause as well.

From the photographs you can get some idea of how we have used your financial support!!
Stacks of tinned milk, rice, pasta, flour, pulses, beans, tomato products, tinned fish, rusks, sugar, tinned meat and soap now await the volunteers who will pack the food parcels ready for distribution by staff of Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia to the more than 200 families on the Social Services list who are in need in Apokoronas.
At the latest meeting of Χείρα Βοηθείας last week, Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis pledged a donation on behalf of the Municipality of a loaf of Easter Bread for each family to be added to the food bags.
If you know someone in your village who you think might qualify to receive a food bag, you are urged to encourage and support them to contact Angeliki at the Social Services Office in Vrysses Town Hall – telephone 2825340314 – so they can get the help they need.

Apokoronas' Farmers' Market
Bigger - Yes! Better - Yes!
People we spoke to commented on the great improvement the Municipality has achieved over the first 12 months of the market’s operation.
Balloons and candy floss, coffee and souvlakia in the sunshine gave the market a really lively, friendly atmosphere.
Members of the Χείρα Βοηθείας team took the opportunity to promote the lottery to raise money to buy food for all those in need in Apokoronos. Ticket sales were good and it gave the group much needed publicity among the Greek Community.
After a bit of a shaky start, the Municipal Farmers’ Market has made a good start on the promotion of local products and with the support of the whole community will no doubt go from strength to strength.
We will do our best to bring you early notification of the date of the next one, so if you missed it this time we will hope to see you there!
Second Annual Social Evening
in aid of
The evening got off to an early start as the entertainers arrived early to set up their equipment and carry out their sound checks! Word about the large numbers expected must have got round because people started arriving before 7 pm to make sure of their seats!
Soon the whole Taverna was a buzz of activity as friends greeted friends and the wine started to flow. Having produced their tickets, the guests were immediately faced with tables displaying the more than 70 raffle prizes – all donated by supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας from across the Municipality. Works of art, a beautiful quilt, pieces of finely crafted traditional Cretan furniture, homemade produce, various bottles (of course!), a meal for 6 at the Hippokoronion and an assortment of meat pies (the name doesn’t really do them justice!) had all been tastefully displayed to tempt the guests.
Good Food! Good Music!
Determined to try to stick to the timetable, the mezedakia were served and soon the place, packed out by now, was at table. The steady stream of dishes – the stuffed cabbage leaves, the fava, the dakos, the courgette patties and the wonderfully fresh mixed salad – were avidly consumed against the background of Greek music performed by Menios on the Bouzouki and Tasos on the guitar. This created a great atmosphere which was achieved by the musicians without there being any problem for those wishing to continue their conversations. So far so good!
The red and white wine flowed freely. The young men and women serving were kept busy replenishing the carafes between bringing the pilafi and then the plates of roast meat. For the vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements, the Taverna served (what were reported to be!) a delicious Boureki and a tasty Briam.
At this point, after Menios and Tasos had rounded off their marathon performance with a rousing rendition of Zorba’s Dance with plenty of audience participation, Dog Pound Blues gave us a small taste of what was to come!
There was to be no halt in the proceedings as Pantelis Kaparoudakis, the proprietor and our host, stepped forward to treat us to his very fine voice singing a traditional Cretan song.
All those people who had donated prizes for the raffle were publicly thanked and special mention was made of two donations, each of €50, in loving memory of their mother, Stella Simvoulakis, by her son, Manolis and her daughter, Zoe.
The Raffle! Music and Dancing!
This provided the opportunity for the Raffle Team to make their final preparations! Numbers were drawn by Dog Pound Blues’ lead singer Chrissie Pound. Winners were announced and directed to the prizes on display. Each winner made off with the prize of their choice until, in a very short time, all 70 plus prizes were claimed and the tables were bare! Any concern that so many prizes would result in a long drawn –out affair were allayed as all involved kept up the pace!
Then, as the pies with honey were served, Dog Pound Blues began in earnest with a selection of music perfectly suited to their audience with the result that a very large number of people found themselves dancing the night away until the early hours.
Eventually, the evening had to end. As they left, countless guests expressed their immense satisfaction with the Taverna’s food, its quality and quantity, the free-flowing wine, the really excellent music and the fun of the raffle!
Money!Money!Money!
In the cold light of day, after all the admin had been completed and our bill at the Hippokoronion had been settled,
€779 had been raised with the tickets and donations and the raffle had produced the princely sum of €950 giving Χείρα Βοηθείας a total of €1,729 to buy food and other essential items to support all those in need in Apokoronas.

Regarding raising money for the new Kindergarten school. We started collecting for the special blackout curtains that they needed for the Siesta room where the children sleep. The school were able to find the funds for these, so our efforts changed to providing large non-slip rugs for the same room. We raised 300 euros and presented this to the school before Christmas. Today we donated 400euros to the Senior School in Vamos for Books. Further events are planned.
Please see the attached poster that we will be putting in Jon's the Butcher shop to thank people for their contributions. We would be grateful if you could include this information in your next newsletter.
Whilst we were at the school, the Headmaster spoke to us about an 'English Room' that they want to create. They already have a selection of English reference books that have been donated, and these are available in the school library for everyone in the Community to access. Over the next few weeks we will be talking to Sophia the English teacher about the posters, maps, pictures etc that she wants for the walls of this room. It would be great if we could ask for your help to source these.
Thank you for your help
Kind regards

Τhe Steering Group of Χείρα Βοηθείας has met
Early indications are that more than 100 tickets have already been sold! Members of the Steering Group agreed to make a final push over the next 7 days. So if you have not got your tickets yet phone Joan on 6947116766 or email her at [email protected]
As part of the continuing effort to involve all sections of community of Apokoronas, the Greek members of the Steering Group have organised a huge lottery with the winning prize of a 32 inch plasma television! Tickets are €1 each.
We reviewed the February Distribution. John reported that it was the best organised distribution so far and he thanked Angeliki from the Municipality’s Social Services Office and the staff of Agia Sofia and of Boethia Sto Spiti for their work.
The next distribution is scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd which is about 10 days before [Greek] Easter– the sheer volume of food parcels requiring 2 days to distribute!
Tony reported that we have €4,990 in the funds. This underlined the importance of making the Nippos Event and the Lottery a resounding success. The Steering Group expressed its confidence that the people of Apokoronas will continue to give us their support.
The day to day work of promoting the Red Boxes continues. They have been numbered and a notice attached to each with a list of the items of food we particularly need people to donate.
Several other ideas for fund-raising were discussed. More news about them soon!

EWWR 2012 - Surprise !
Hello all. I thought we had finished with the European Week for Waste Reduction but I was told by DEDISA this morning that in their position as regional organisers, they are nominating our efforts during EWWR2012 in November for a European Award! There are many phases to go through I guess before the EU makes its decision but I thought you might like to know that our efforts did not go un-noticed. Thank you all.
Do You Have Medication You No Longer Need?
They will be pleased to receive your unwanted medications.
The Clinic is open in the evening from 6pm.
The Clinic is in Romali – a side street on the left at the bottom of Sfakion. It is on the left almost at the end in a block flats. There is a bell to ring on the outside and the sign “MSF” on the window.
If the Clinic is closed, the Chemist on the right at the bottom of Sfakion (before Romali) will take your donations for MSF.

Epiphany falls on the twelfth day after Christmas, that is to say January 6th – last Sunday. Orthodox belief says that it was the day of the baptism of Jesus by John and that this is where the day's association with water arises.
In several local villages, there is a Blessing the Waters. The priest throws a large crucifix into the waters. Young men compete to retrieve it.

ANNOUNCEMENT - CALL
The Association PRO.T.A. (Prevention of Traffic Accidents) is organizing, as every year for the 3rd consecutive year, TREE PLANTING in memory of road accident victims. A memory that has to be maintained and strengthened. The tree planting will take place in the grounds of the Hospital of Chania on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 11 am. The purpose of the event is to raise public awareness about road accidents. The event is being organized by the group of citizens THE CYCLISTS, the EPA.S of Chania and Chania Hospital. At 10.30 there will an assembly beforehand at the Municipal Market where, on bicycles, cyclists carrying messages on their backs will make their way to the Hospital of Chania. The messages will be: - "The streets belong to everyone" - "Put your life on the bike" - "The next traffic victim might be you " - "Cycle, walk, live" We invite all to participate in this event both in the cycle parade and in the tree planting. However, we especially urge those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, so that by their presence they can strengthen the voice of society against the unjust loss of innocent victims because of human behavior and the indifference of the State to the need for better maintenance of the road network of Crete. Together we can. Our motto: "One tree of life for every human traffic victim." Chania 12/17/2012 For the Association PRO.T.A. The President George Archontakis |
Christmas Preparations Complete!
Christmas Message from Issie
I would like to say a big thank you to all who have donated, crocheted, knitted…taken in the Red baskets ..and given their time to our Charity.
We have had a very successful year thanks to all of you, without this help none of this would be possible..Thank you all.
I must also thank the team of workers who take on all the jobs of seeing that everything we need is brought together and runs very smoothly..a great team effort..thank you all.
Many people ask where does all the food go? I can assure you all it all goes to very needy families and we must keep up the momentum as one year finishes another starts and I do not foresee 2013 being any better for the families so we must try and help as much as we can for as long as we can and with your help I am sure we will continue to do so.
May I wish you all a very Happy and peaceful Xmas…and best wishes to all for 2013.
Issie McLean.

Ready For Christmas 2012
Numbers continue to rise as the economic and social crisis deepens. This has increased costs to nearly 3,000 euros for each distribution and makes donations of food through the Red Boxes ever more important. Also on display were some of the blankets knitted by volunteers to help people keep warm this winter. A wonderful effort!
Christmas at the workshop
The Christmas decorations in Fres raised 190 euro for Xeira Boetheias.
Greetings from Jorgen, Lone and Kirsten.

Sad but...
Barbara contacted theGefyraTheBridge with the sad news that she had found a dead caretta caretta turtle on the beach in Kavros. Despite the obviously distressing sight, Barbara thoughtfully took a photograph. She was able to pass this information to Archelon-on-Crete, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Archelon in turn informed the Port Police whose job it is to record the event so that lessons can be drawn.

Fourth Food Distribution in Apokoronas
The Municipality of Apokoronas, the group of volunteers “Χείρα Βοηθείας”, the Social Services Enterprise of Apokoronas, the Metropolitan Diocese of Kydonia and Apokoronas, through its representatives and programmes "Help in the Home Armenoi" and "Help in the Home Agia Sofia Social Services Foundation" completed the fourth distribution of food and other essential items to all those in need in Apokoronas. About a dozen volunteers from the group “Χείρα Βοηθείας” came to the Food Bank at the former school in Nippos, to pack parcels for over 200 families. As the country sinks into crisis, so the number of people in need increases. Nearly 20 more families have been registered on the list of the Social Services Enterprise of Apokoronas just in the last month.
The Apokoronas Vice-Mayor responsible Manolis Nikoloudis said: “The Municipality of Apokoronas continues to successfully distribute food to the villages of our municipality, in partnership with these institutions. The distribution is now well established and it is very important for a provincial municipality to maintain the home delivery of food from its communal food store and to support in every way its residents and citizens who are in need.
The Municipality of Apokoronas is trying to create new social support structures beyond food distribution and if these efforts come to fruition, we will make an announcement very soon."
So, he expressed his thanks to the groups and the volunteers as well as to those who give from what little they have to support this aim.
Mr. Pete Sheppard, a member of the Steering Group of “Χείρα Βοηθείας” said: “Thanks to the generosity of the people living in Apokoronas, we are able to provide this support. Many people buy an extra item when they are doing their shopping and put it in the Red Boxes in the shops. Other people support financially, with donations and fund-raising. The amount of food that we can provide depends on this generosity and social solidarity. If you can not find a Red Box in your village, please contact at 28253-40314 so that we can get one put there.
Recently the Steering Group of “Χείρα Βοηθείας” has been strengthened even further and now has among its members representatives from the Municipality and the Greek Orthodox Church as well as the Programme "Help in the Home Armenoi" and "Help in the Home Agia Sofia Social Services Foundation". This means that we can work more closely together to make sure everyone, wherever they live and wherever they originate gets the support they need.
If this winter is as bad as last year's, then it is crucial that we all work together to meet the challenge. I congratulate the Municipality of Apokoronas for its excellent initiative to distribute wood from pruning the trees to be used by people for heating. Also in the near future we hope to be able to distribute fresh foods as well.
If you know of families or individuals in your area who are in need, please contact us at 28253-40314 to ensure that they get the support they need.
Χείρα Βοηθείας November distribution - all packed!
A tremendously smooth operation was completed in more or less an hour and a half.
As the amount of food and essential items grows we face a serious problem of how to package the things. Either we must use much needed funds to buy strong re-usable bags or we must find a sponsor to foot the bill. Can you help?
We have already begun preparations for the distribution for the Christmas period. We want it to be a bit special ! You can help by keeping those Red Boxes filled! If your shop does not have a Red Box please contact us [email protected] so we can put that right !
Thanks again to all for your past and future support.
prepares to face the Winter
The new Steering Group was announced. Following a meeting at the Demarcheio on Wednesday, Vice-Mayor Manolis Nikoloudis, representing the Municipality of Apokoronas, a Representative of the Bishop of Kudonias and Apokoronas, Athina Matsamaki from Boithia Sto Spiti and Demetra Iliaki from the Agia Sofia Foundation will join the existing 6 members of the Steering Group. The significance of this development is vital in making Χείρα Βοηθείας even more effective and cements our links with the Cretan Community.
John Eardley reported on the preparations for the next distribution due to take place on November 7th and 8th to the196 families now on the list. For the November distribution about €1,700 has been spent on food and essentials to augment the food collected. Anne Clayton emphasised that everything was being done on a voluntary basis.
There was some discussion about where to buy the extra food needed. It was generally agreed that while 40% of the items had been collected using the Red Boxes, the rest had to be purchased in the most cost-effective way possible even if that meant Lidl’s. Yes, support for local shops was important and the 40% of things donated (between €1,000 and €1,200) each time was clearly helpful to local businesses. But if the shop is not chosen on the basis of the lowest price then how should the choice be made between each and every shop in Apokoronas? Pete Sheppard observed that by working hard to increase the number of Red Boxes and the number of items placed in them, we could reduce the money spent in Lidl’s and increase the prosperity of local shops.
Tony Lane spoke about the successful fundraising activities carried out. Almost €12,000 has been raised in the 8 months since Χείρα Βοηθείας was founded. “It may sound a lot,” he said ”but the numbers of families in need of our support grows every time. After our experience of last winter, we expect we will need all our resources and more.” He thanked everyone for their generosity and urged us all to make ever greater efforts.
Also present were Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis from the Municipality and staff from Βοήθεια Στο Σπίτι and Αγια Σοφία, including new Steering Group members, Athina Matsamaki and Demetra Iliaki. Athina told us a bit about her work as the Community Nurse and the work of the other members of the two teams. She told us that names of those in need should be passed to the local priest, to Agia Sofia or direct to the Social Services Office in Vrysses. They would do the rest.
Petros announced a new initiative by the Municipality to distribute firewood to those in need using trees pruned by the Council, over the next coming months.
Χείρα Βοηθείας is in good shape to prepare for a special distribution at Christmas. They are already calling for fundraising ideas (and volunteers to help carry them out!) for January 2013. It is understood that people may have limited time. Participation in one activity does not commit you to every activity. Many hands make light work!
Ideas, suggestions and offers of help should be sent to [email protected]
A New Phase for Χείρα Βοηθείας
The main item of the discussion was the need to strengthen the links between our organizations in order to improve co-operation to make our work to support all those in need in Apokoronas even more effective.
The outcome of the meeting is that Vice-Mayor Manolis Nikoloudis, representing the Municipality of Apokoronas, a representative of the Bishop of Kudonias and Apokoronas, Athina from Boithia Sto Spiti and Demetra from the Agia Sofia Foundation will join the existing 6 members of the Steering Group.
The Steering Group will meet at least once a month. The Support Group will, of course, continue to meet on a regular basis.

Grand Car Boot Sale – a great success
Pitches of all shapes and sizes were placed on the Harbour Car Park in Georgioupolis. From before 9 am to well after 1pm, people from all over came to find a bargain, meet up with friends and have a good time. Sinatra’s Beer Tent seemed a centre of attraction!
We were entertained by a singer and by a magician out of Chania. Both gave their skills and talent without charge to make the event enjoyable for all.
In fact, everything needed to put on the event was begged, borrowed or donated to make sure that every euro raised will be spent on food and other essential items.
Issie McLean, the prime mover behind the Car Boot Sale, said:
“Please let every one know we made a sum total of €1132 plus €115 in donations (plus an English twenty pence piece and two Norwegian 10 krone coins!) - that's €1247! I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all who gave their time to help on the Stalls ... others who provided transport ... all the people in Georgioupolis’ shops and tavernas.
Without them all, what we do would not be possible. A special THANK YOU to Pete & Kate of SINATRA's BAR who organised all the cars and also to their friends who gave up their time to help out on the day. Thanks also to all those who handed in donations to Sinatra's and all the lovely clothes which will now go to the families.
Thanks also to our Singer Dave who put on a brave performance without his microphone! Well done!
A big Thank You to our “Guess the Bean Jar” couple who took it round the ground - it raised over 61 euros and was won by Mrs Yvonne Driver.
Our lovely Magician, Kalimera Nota, from Chania gave the children (and adults) a wonderful show. It was enjoyed by all ages.Well done !
Thanks also to the CANTINA at the front for giving us the electricity we needed and to Mr Sifis Stavroulakis for organising the stage and chairs. Thank you!
From what I heard everyone seemed to have enjoyed their day…the weather was lovely just a bit hot but we will not complain about that!
Some people have asked where does the money go? 100% goes to buy food for the needy families and if anyone would like to know more about Xeira Boetheias (Helping Hand) Please contact Pete Sheppard who will willingly give them any information they may require.
Thanks again to EVERYONE who helped in any small way. It is a pleasure to know so many good human beings!”

Χείρα Βοηθείας : “Food Distribution best organised so far”
Local priests and Community Representatives arrived at the Food Bank in Nippos to collect the parcels made up for all their parishioners and fellow villagers who are in need.
With the excellent recording systems now in place, the operation can be made even more effective and responsive to people’s actual needs. By recording exact numbers of families according to village and size (no names are known in order to guarantee privacy) it is possible to make sure that no-one is overlooked.
Athena and Agape of Βοήθεια Στο Σπίτι also took away with them supplies of nappies and other items suitable for baby care so that they can try to meet needs on the spot without having to wait for the regular distribution.
All those who have placed items of food in the Red Boxes in the shops throughout the Municipality, all those who have organised events to raise money to buy food and all those who have participated should be proud of their achievements
Keir’s Trek : Sea to Sea Mission Accomplished
It was one year to the day, in Vamos Square (!), that Keir’s fellow trekker, David, had proposed the traverse of the White Mountain Massif. Particularly poignant for Keir – and something that made the achievement all the greater for him – was the fact that it had been David's life long ambition to do this Trek. Apparently for over 30 years he had been hoping that one day he would do it. On top of that, his father had been a great walker and it meant a lot to David that his father would have been proud of him.
There was a question and answer session, followed by a laptop presentation of a small selection of photographs chronicling this truly impressive feat.
Many of those present took the opportunity to redeem the cash pledges they had made to Χείρα Βοηθείας in recognition of the Trek. The final total stands at €751! Fantastic!
We plan to post Keir’s account of the Trek as soon as possible. Watch this space!
Χείρα Βοηθείας - Food Distribution in Apokoronas
The Staff of Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia will distribute the food and essential items later this week.
Pete Sheppard, member of Xeira Boetheias said
“First of all, I want to thank all those who have bought an extra item in the shop and put it in the Red Box. I want to thank all those who have organized events and activities to raise money and those who participated in them. In the photograph you will see the result of their efforts!
When he blessed the work of Xeira Boetheias, Mr. Damaskinos, the Most Reverend Bishop of the Metropolis of Kudonias & Apokoronas, commended it and wished the group great strength to keep it going. Specifically he urged everyone in Apokoronas all to work together.
The next step is to strengthen our links with the Priests and the Community Representatives in each village. As leaders of their communities, each has a very important role to make sure that every parishioner understands the work of Xeira Boetheias and that every Supermarket and Mini-market welcomes and promotes the Red Boxes. Then we can make sure that Xeira Boetheias becomes even more effective and that we do not overlook anyone in need in Apokoronas.”
He added :
“The Greek idea of Social Solidarity is very important. Better than the word “charity”, Social Solidarity reminds us that “In their place it could be me”.
Keir's Trek : Sea to Sea Mission Accomplished
Day 4 Monday 10th September
They started by ascending gradually on the western flank of Madhaki (2225m), then more steeply to a flattish area almost directly north of Pachnes. They reached the peak of Pachnes at 2453 metres which was a height gain from Katsiveli basin of about 525 metres in around 3 hours.
They descended into the hanging valley of Ghaidhara at about 1950m. At a height between 1800 and 1900 metres at a point north of the Zaranou Spring, they picked up on the old mule track high above the Elighia Gorge and followed it to the Zaranou Spring. That was about another 2 hours.
From the Zaranou Spring, the route rises up and down across the gullies on the western flank of Zaranokefala (2099m).From there the mule track rounds a spur to the south west of Zaronokefala with a descent traverse of the southern slopes of the massif Zaranokefala and Koutsakas(1646).
They descended eventually to village of Aghios Ioanis at 760m to find the ‘Alonia Mountain Hostel’ with its promise of an evening meal and a bunk house bed and breakfast.
Descent from Pachnes just under 1700 metres and from the Zaranou Spring about 1140 metres.
Despite all time projections, our trekkers were on their feet for 12 hours on Day 4!!!!
Day 5. Tuesday 11th September
Taking the path towards Seloudha and eventually picking up the south coast path heading towards Aghios Pavlos, after about 2 hours they had descended into the western side valley of the Aradhena Gorge. At the foot of that side valley, in the middle of the Aradhena Gorge, they headed south along the bottom of the gorge to emerge at Marmara!
Sea to sea mission accomplished!
But:- after a swim and a rest, just the 3.5 – 4 kms. along the coastal track past Likos, Finikas and over the headland into Loutro to get the ferry to Chora Sfakion.
****************
Keir phoned in his reaction to reaching Marmara. He was obviously elated but quite tired (not his words!). The terrain had been viciously unforgiving and his boots, purchased new for the trek, were “cut to ribbons”.
Would he do it again? “Not a chance!” Well we will see…..
*********
Due to some logistical problems, we hope to publish photos of Keir’s triumphal return as soon as possible!
Keir’s Trek has attracted cash pledges of €495. There is still time for you to show your appreciation of his effort by making a pledge to the Municipally – sponsored charity Χείρα Βοηθείας to support its work in raising money to provide food and essential items to the almost 200 families in need here in Apokoronas.

Keir's Trek : Kalyves to Loutro
Day 3 Sunday 9th September
Now it is getting serious. First it was south up onto the ridge to the peak of Spathi. That is a total height gain of 2050 metres –
about 750 metres up from the Volika Hut in about 3 hours.
From there the descent was through the Ghourghoutha tou Spathiou, the Stavrou Seli to the Livadha basin at 1775 metres – so that’s a descent of 275 metres from Spathi to Livadha. That took about 2½ hours.
Then it was back up again to the Katsivali Hut at 1970 metres. Here to the west is the peak of Kefalas (2121m) and to the east Svourichi (2356m).Then the route descended to the Katsiveli Basin for our trekkers to find a suitable place to sleep. Taking it pretty slowly they have walked for 7 hours so they were ready for that!
They really are away from civilization now. They are carrying everything they need. You remember those 12 x 1½ litre bottles of water? And all their equipment for sleeping rough (and surviving!) over these last two days of the trek!

We have received cash pledges of €470 so far in recognition of this effort.

Kalyves to Loutro : Traversing the White Mountain Massif
Day 2. Saturday 8th September
Keir Reports
After a leisurely de-camp, we had a day of short sharp ascent – a distance of 12 kms due south, ascending the valley up to the Volika refuge hut. 3 hours and a total height gain of about 1300 metres. There our support team of wife Trish, Pete and Don met up with us. They came up to about 50 metres below the Volika Hut in a 4x4 vehicle using the vehicle track from Madaro, bringing 18 litres of water (12 x 1.5 litre bottles!)an evening meal, our breakfast and lunch for the following day. We will sleep outside the hut.
Pete Morton of the Support Team adds
Don James and I drove up a rough shepherd's track to the hut which sits just above 5000 ft up in the White mountains. It is the highest point that could be reached on their trek. We were able to supply them with food and water and other supplies and equipment. It is the last point that they can take on water for two days. Tomorrow [Sunday] they will set off on a difficult two days in the high desert sleeping out in the open. But so far all is going well and it’s not too hot.
Make Your Pledge Now!
We have received cash pledges of €405 so far in recognition of this effort. Email Pete Sheppard at [email protected] with your pledge.
The Water Supply of Apokoronas

Kayves to Loutro : Traversing the White Mountain Massif
Day1. Friday 7th September
Keir reports
"8am Friday (7/09/12) ready for the off. Kalyves Beach. Just carrying water and first aid kit. We take the road to the bridge over the Koiliaris River, then follow the river-side tracks through to the Stylos-Megali Horafia road. We ascend the Diktamos Gorge to the road crossing at its head. After 3 hours we have done about 6.5 kms with a total height gain of about 250 metres.
Next it is across country to pick up the ascending road to the village of Kamboi and on into the hamlet of Gero Prinos. That will be another 6.5 kms and a height gain of about 550 metres.
Today’s route will have the total walking time of 6-6½ hours. So we should be there at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon."
We have received cash pledges of €350 so far in recognition of this effort. Email Pete Sheppard at [email protected] with your pledge.

Kalyves to Loutro – Trekking the White Mountain Massif
“On 7th September I am starting a walking trek from the north coast to the south coast, traversing The White Mountain massif and crossing the peak of the highest mountain, Pachnes at 2453 metres (about 8,025 feet).
We will also be crossing the peak of Spathi (2050 metres), and traversing around the peak of Zaranokefala (or Zaranos) at 2099 metres.
I will start on the beach at Kalyves (near the Inka supermarket) early on 7th September. I anticipate that we will end the challenging trek at some time in the afternoon / evening on Tuesday 11th September, at sea level on the south coast - firstly at Marmara, which is a small bay at the foot of the Aradhena Gorge, and then on to Loutro for what we hope will be a very rewarding and comfortable night’s sleep.
We will be sleeping rough - under the stars - and the nights up there are cold - sometimes very cold, even in the summer and autumn months.
The greatest challenge will be to carry sufficient water. We will need about 9 or 10 litres of water each for the two very long days away from civilisation. That is a great deal of weight and, of course, to that we have to add emergency clothing and rain proofs, first aid materials, sun cream, a cooking facility, sleeping bags, bivvy bags, and food of course.”

Fun Run / Walk Neo Chorio to Stylos
- a brilliant success
Many participants remarked on the thorough professionalism of the organizers –The Chania Running Club for Health. Throughout the course an Ambulance was on standby and Red Cross Samaritans kept a watchful eye on all those taking part. At the Registration Area in the square of Neo Chorio, the volunteers were kept busy, registering the runners and walkers and issuing official race numbers and the T-shirts especially produced to commemorate the Koiliaris 2012 Event. The Municipal Bus brought wave upon wave from the parking areas in Stylos to the Start. Lively music and the boundless enthusiasm of the Master of Ceremonies built the great atmosphere of excitement as people prepared for the sound of the starting pistol.
It was all over very quickly. The runners accelerated away to reach the Finishing Line well ahead of the walkers, some of whom seemed unashamedly to be more interested in the beautiful environment than in racing to Stylos!
Stylos saw a very large crowd welcoming home each and every competitor. The party – the traditional treat or κέρασμα – was already in full swing. There followed a short speech by the Mayor of Apokoronas, Grigoris Markakis. First came a special presentation to the younger competitors. Then we had the Medal Ceremony for the Gold, Silver and Bronze places for the Men and for the Women. Each Medal winner mounted the purpose-built podium to be presented with their medal, a Certificate and a Cup amid great applause and a great deal of photography!
Finally, the Big Cheque – made up of entrance fees and donations – was presented by Giorgos Alogdianakis,President of the Chania Health and Road Runners Club, to Χείρα Βοηθείας to support its work. A total of €925 was raised. 100% of this wonderful sum will be used to buy food and other essential items for the nearly 200 families who are in need in Apokoronas. This is possible because all the expenses of the race were met by generous sponsors and by people giving freely of their time and energy.
The organisers seem keen to make this race an annual event. Here are some photographs to remind us how much fun it was and also to inspire more people to join us in 2013!

Fun Run / Walk Neo Chorio to Stylos
Sunday August 12th
A whole range of local organisations are providing the traditional treat (το κέρασμα) to celebrate the event and welcome us and all the other participants to their community.
Χείρα Βοηθείας has been asked by the organisers to conduct the registration of the runners and walkers. Joan Sheppard is co-ordinating a team to do this and collect the €5 entrance fees. If you cannot walk or run but would still like to help, please phone her on 6947116766. She will explain the details. We will need you for about an hour, from 5pm until 6pm, on Sunday in Neo Chorio. Then you can watch the race and join in the party in Stylos at the end.
It is not too late to register. Phone me on 6943683064 or email [email protected] or simply reply to this email with your name and it is done!
If your plans for the weekend are not yet clear, the organizers tell us you can register on Sunday up until 5.30pm. in Neo Chorio.
After a busy week of pre-recording a piece for Kydon TV and then a series of press conferences for NEA TV and Kydon on Wednesday,I can really feel the momentum building. The meeting last night (Thursday) in Stylos to put the final touches to the event just showed the depth of good will towards Χείρα Βοηθείας. Everyone made clear to me their appreciation of the efforts we are putting in to support all those in need in Apokoronas.
So, please do your best to join us and get a taste of what we all came here for – to be part of the community, contributing our ideas and skills to take Apokoronas forward.
See you Sunday !

Evening of Music
in aid of Xeira Boetheias
- a fantastic success !
Several hundred visitors and local people gathered in the Square of Georgioupolis, last Sunday evening (22.07.12).
We publish here some photographs and a small slide show to record the event.
The entertainment was started by the Rethymnon Youth Orchestra – almost 40 highly skilled musicians with vocalists - conducted (and clearly inspired!) by their charismatic conductor, Rino Christ. A wonderful mixture of classical and modern music enthralled the audience as they relaxed in the Square’s many and varied cafes, bars and tavernas.
The calm and relaxed atmosphere of the pedestrianised square and the warm evening contributed a real festival feeling to the event.
This, with the superb quality of the music, made the job of the teams of volunteers collecting cash donations for Xeira Boetheias a relatively straightforward task. Nearly 20 members of the group moved among the crowd. By the end of the evening an incredible €2,112 had been donated.
The very high standard of the entertainment was maintained by Denny’s Singers whose voices in solos and duets demonstrated a quality and breadth not often experienced. The final set was performed by Dog Pound Blues, an Apokoronas-based group presenting acoustic and electric Blues & Rock songs that upped the tempo, inspired a final bout of donations and took us dancing into the early hours.
All the artists donated their time and their skills. Sifis Stavroulakis, the Vice-Mayor of Georgioupolis, had taken care of the staging, lighting and the basic amplification equipment. Staff from the Municipality were on hand throughout the day preparing the stage and generally solving all the little challenges that arise with this sort of show. The Municipality had provided support with the publicity.
All this means that 100% of the €2112 is available to the team responsible for providing the food to support nearly 200 families in Apokoronas. A lot of food is collected through the Red Boxes in the local shops. What they don’t collect – what people don’t give! – Xeira Boetheias must buy.
The visitors had been reminded that in Greece there is no safety net for people who find themselves in economic difficulty. Xeira Boetheias and the other parts of the Municipality’s Social Services, Boithia Sto Spiti and the Agia Sofia Foundation are trying to work together to provide the support people need.

Αγιασμος and Inauguration Of
Χειρα Βοηθειας’ Food Bank
Well over 100 people attended the Grand Opening and Blessing by the Most Reverend Bishop of the Metropolis of Kudonias and Apokoronas, Mr. Damaskinos of the Municipality’s Centre for Social Solidarity in Agioi Pantes last night. (Thursday).
Petros Vagionakis, the President of the Social Services of the Municipality of Apokoronas added his voice to the general atmosphere of optimism and determination to make the Centre a success.
On behalf of Xeira Boetheias, Pete Sheppard thanked the Most Reverend Bishop and the Mayor for their support. He went on to describe the activities of Xeira Boetheias’ supporters. He invited those present to take a look at the Food Bank. Part of the food had been collected in the Red Boxes throughout Apokoronas and the additional items had been purchased using some of the more than €3,000 raised since Easter. He thanked Vice-Mayor Nikoloudis and Councillor Vagionakis, the Social Services staff at the Town Hall, the staff from Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia for their help and encouragement.
In view of the nature of the event, it was most appropriate that the speeches were followed by a “Παραδοσιακό κέρασμα” (Traditional Treat) which was almost purely symbolic. In that way the demands of the tradition of the Αγιασμός were respected while at the same time sensitivity was shown to the issue that had brought all of us together.
TV crews were present but no details of transmission schedules are available.
A reporter from Chaniotika Nea was busy moving around the gathering. Friday’s edition might be worth a look!
The Boy With The Suitcase

As part of the build up to the 7th Festival Against Racism, Students from the 2nd General Lykeio of Chania gave this performance in the Amphitheatre at Vamos on Wednesday (26th June)
As the Programme has it “ With an empty suitcase in his hand, but full of psychological reserves, young Naz teaches us that what is important in life is to try, to help, to dream, to hope, to be reconciled with yourself”.
Wonderfully acted against a powerful minimalist set, the production is not to be missed if you get the chance to catch it in Chania.

Kokkino Horio : New Customers must "seal the deal"
All of the 65 property owners in Kokkino Horio who have now been connected to the Municipal Water Supply need to
- visit the Council House in Vrysses to sign their contracts and get their water meters immediately.
- Please contact your proxy if you are abroad or contact Anna Kitas at this email address.
Unfortunately, as you would expect, failure to do this will leave the Municipality no alternative but to consider disconnection.
Anna and Spiros Kitas worked hard to overcome the problems faced by those people buying their water from New Century rather than the Municipality of Apokoronas. Now Vice Mayor Manolis Haritakis has asked us to make sure the people concerned visit the Council House in Vrysses to sign their contracts and get their water meters immediately. After the last 10 years Mr Haritakis is the only politician to have taken this issue seriously. The Municipality cannot afford to give water for no money. Goodness only knows we need the money for many things - holes in roads just being one !
Please do what you can to help with this,
Thanks a lot

Dear Pete
We live in Kokkino Chorio & have already applied for our water meter on the new system for Ag. Giorgos.
Please note that we made our application in Vamos & that all applications can be made in person at the Dimarchio in Vamos as the staff there know the situation.
Several home owners have already applied & paid for their water meters but there are several residents/owners that have not.
Everyone applying for the new system must take their building permit & passport (if you have copies for them to keep that would be useful & time saving) Some owners do not have their building permit & we have been told that a copy can be obtained from the Town Planning services, near the Court House in Chania.
A payment of 300 euros plus vat = 369 euros will be requested in cash (they did not accept cards) & a receipt will be issued.
The more home owners that know this the better, so everyone can apply for a water meter & can then & pay for the water they use.
Please also note that homeowners are responsible for any leaks in the current pipework system & should ensure that all leaks are repaired quickly to avoid water loss & loss of water pressure.
Manolis Haritakis has told us that It is important that all mains water taps are left in the open position to ensure that every home receives water. There is no need, as there was in the old water system, for anyone to close taps unless of course there is a water leak !
I hope this information is useful & that you can distribute this to your contacts/readers to make the transition go more smoothly.

Walking in Apokoronas
More than 60 people were delighted to accept the invitation of the Municipality to participate in a walk in Apokoronas last Sunday.
The route linked up several churches of great antiquity and fine architectural richness in the area of Stylos. People of all ages took part. There was a real holiday atmosphere.
The Social Services Department of Apokoronas, the Stylos Community Council, the Cultural Association of Stylos and the New Sampson Athletic Association of Stylos had all combined to make the event a great success. The route was signposted by the New Sampson members and much needed hospitality was provided by the Cultural Association at the half-way point of the walk.
We were welcomed by Mr.Ioannis Gavrillakis the Topikos of Stylos. We set off from the Plateia led by Councillor Stratos Saridakis in the company of Vice Mayor Manolis Haritakis, Vice Mayor Manolis Nikoloudis and Councillor Petros Vagionakis and followed the river as it meandered through the orange groves.
As part of the Municipality’s plan to promote the beautiful countryside and fine historical architecture, this event was a great success.
Each participant received a certificate to thank them for their participation. We think we should thank the organizers for giving us a great day out !

Kokkino Horio Water Supply Connected This Morning (Thursday)
Residents now need to go to the Town Hall in Vrysses to apply for their Municipal Water Meter !
This is a fast response all those involved can be justly proud of. Well done !
Fund-Raising in Nippos- a great success !
The Fund-Raising Social Evening in aid of Χείρα Βοηθείας organized by the Gefyra The Bridge Newsletter Team attracted more than 130 people.
After a full meal of several courses a Euro Auction of local arts was held. Local artists and craftsmen had generously donated examples of their work. Thanks to Kirsten, people soon understood the Euro Auction and Jørgan was very quickly rushing about the hall to collect the bids!
All the hard work our supporters have put in was amply rewarded. A big thank you goes to Pantelis for his hospitality and his generosity. His gift of the wine certainly helped the auction go well! Thanks go to those who organized the distribution of the tickets and all those who sold them. The shops and businesses who sold tickets for us helped a lot. The pieces of art which were donated made this event very special. Thanks to those who gave so generously.
Now that the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας continues all the year round, fund-raising is very important alongside the Red Box collections of food and other non-perishable items in the Supermarkets and Mini-markets throughout Apokoronas.
Our job now is to make the best possible use of every euro. We will use the money to buy food and other essential items to add to the Red Box collections. Our aim is to provide 200 parcels to people in need in the Municipality at the end of June. We must build on the success of tonight’s event. We ask your readers to watch out for the next fund-raising event!
The total “profit” for the fund-raising evening was €1,251.81. Ticket sales raised €607.50. The Auction raised €450.00 (and 20 drachmas!) and we received €194.31 in donations.
Apokoronas' Appeal upheld today
(Thursday)
Good News !
Today a Chania Court found in favour of the Municipality's Appeal to get the injunction against the demolition of the illegal Fereniki building in Georgioupolis lifted. The owner of the Fereniki Taverna wanted the case postponed. This was refused. Readers will recall that illegal constructions must go so that the Town Plan of Georgioupolis is a complete and accurate record of the buildings on the ground. Otherwise EU Funding for a much-needed Sewage System from Kavros to Kalyves is at risk.
We will have the Full Report in about a month.
Many concerned residents had expressed their support for Mayor Grigoris Markakis and his Council on their determined action to safeguard the intersts of Apokoronas in this matter.
Kokkino Horio Water Supply Resolved
The Vice Mayor Mr. Manolis Haritakis, who has responsibility for the water supply, has visited the area and has already taken the initiative of installing a water pump unit to supply water to the residents from the water tank of Parameritis.
According to Mr Haritakis’ statement to us, an application has already been made to the electric company (D.E.H) for the provision of electricity to the water tank unit and he hopes that by the end of May, the necessary works will have been be completed, so that the residents of the area will get their water from the Municipality.
Manolis Haritakis spoke to Spiros and Anna Kitas of the Gefyra The Bridge Newsletter
Apokoronas' first Λαικη Αγορα gets off to a great start
The Kafeneia and Tabernas of Vrysses - as well as the streets ! - were full of residents reviewing their purchases and meeting with friends.
After a proper review of the Market, the Municipality will decide how frequently it will be held - 4 or 5 times a year perhaps.
It certainly got the holiday weekend off to a great start !
Χειρα Βοηθειας getting ready for Easter
In the presence of Councillor Petros Vagianakis and Father Dimitris, volunteers from Cheira Boetheias, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Anglican Church, Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia worked together to sort out and pack all the basic food items that people have donated in the Supermarkets and Minimarkets of Apokoronas.
The Red Baskets of Cheira Boeheias had all been collected together and, under the experienced eye of Issie McClean, boxes and bags were filled. Using the lists of the social services of Apokoronas, essential items were sorted out for both families and single people in need.
A big thank you to all who made this possible by putting an extra item in the red basket when out shopping ! A special mention must be made of all those who participated in the recent sponsored walk. The money you raised was used to buy extra flour, sugar, pasta etc to make sure each parcel was complete. ( Thanks Ann and Ian !)
And don't forget, the work of Cheira Boetheias continues all the year round. To get involved, email us at [email protected]

we had a very successful meeting at Nippos on the last Friday night in March. Over 60 people came. Mr Damianakis MP and Grigoris Markakis, Mayor of Apokoronas attended to answer our questions. Chairman of the Council Stamati Sgourakis and Vice-Mayor Manolis Haritakis attended along with several Municipal Coucilllors. Councillor Pantelis Kaparoudakis represented the Minority Group.
Apart from the unanimous opposition from our politicians to the privatization of Apokoronas’s water I was particularly pleased by the very positive comments of Mr. Eftichios Damianakis MP. He specifically mentioned and endorsed our three principles of Accountability, Transparency and Equal Treatment for All which guide the work of the Gefyra The Bridge Newsletter.
The Question and Answer session went well largely due to the translation skills of Spiros and Aphrodite and the chairing skills of Anna. The united position of the speakers is to oppose the privatisation of Apokoronas' Water!
We are busy putting together a Newsletter Report of the Meeting and some ideas about the next stage of this work. Watch this space !
The meeting was a great start. Thanks for making it happen ! But it was only the beginning ! Stay informed and involved by joining us at www.gefyrathebridge.com or emailing me on [email protected].
